What Is a Swipe File (and How to Actually Build One)

A personal library of work worth stealing from — and the one mistake that makes most of them useless.

A swipe file is a personal collection of work you admire, kept so you can borrow from it later. The term comes from advertising, where copywriters kept folders of ads that worked — not to plagiarise, but so that facing a blank page meant facing a stack of proven approaches instead.

The modern version is mostly social posts: a hook that made you stop scrolling, a thread structured unusually well, a landing page, an onboarding email, a piece of design.

What belongs in one

The useful filter is not “did I like this” but “would I want to look at this again while making something”. That rules out most of what people save. Things that pass:

  • Hooks and openers — first lines that earned the second line
  • Structures — a thread, case study or launch post whose shape you could reuse
  • Voice — writing whose tone you want to learn from
  • Visual treatments — layouts, colour, typography, motion
  • Proof — how someone credibly demonstrated a claim

What does not belong: things you agree with. Agreement is not a reason to save something. A swipe file is a working tool, not a scrapbook of opinions you share.

The mistake that kills most swipe files

Saving links. Almost everyone starts by bookmarking the post — in X bookmarks, an Instagram collection, a Notion page of URLs. Then one of three things happens: the post gets deleted, the account goes private, or you simply cannot find it again among four hundred undated entries.

A swipe file only earns its keep at the moment you are stuck and reach for it. If that reach fails — dead link, no search, wrong app — you stop reaching, and the file quietly becomes a graveyard. The fix is to capture the content itself, not a pointer to it, and to keep it somewhere you can search across everything at once.

A structure that survives contact with reality

Keep it coarse. Five to ten labels you will recognise in six months beats forty precise ones you will never reuse. Tag by what you would use it for rather than by topic — full-text search already handles topic:

  • hooks — openers and first lines
  • structure — formats worth copying
  • visual — design reference
  • voice — tone and phrasing
  • proof — persuasion and evidence

Add one line of note when you save: whyyou kept it. “Opens with the objection instead of the benefit.” That sentence is the entire value of the entry — without it you are left re-deriving what you found interesting.

Building one with SocialClipper

Click the extension on any post across X, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube or LinkedIn and it captures the whole thing — text, images, video, full threads — into one searchable library with tags and notes. Deleted posts stay readable, because you have the content rather than a link. Free for your first 50 posts, and it exports to Markdown if you would rather keep the file in Obsidian.
